Yes he lost weight :o and considering how underweight he already was it was a very scary time. He is on the road to recovery now and he needs to put on a lot of weight before he can be rehomed so watch this space.  :)

Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf
Post by: Ruth on March 03, 2013, 10:06:21 pm
Poor Rupert was 9 1/2 kilos!!!! is not putting on weight and has added at least a couple of inches to his waist.

Initial assessment: typical BT pup full of energy and loves doing bullie runs - has shown no aggression to other dogs and loves people, he is just OTT in everything he does but seems a lovely fella.

His house training is coming on a treat but he still needs some feeding up.

Meant he NOW putting on weight - will see if I can get some more up-to-date photos. It would be lovely if we had someone apply locally (South East)  because then they could get to meet Rupert a few times and work with Terry.

ruth which method do you use for house training, is there a special one for ebt's?  mocha was really hard, using the newpaper method.

He looks really well, you must be proud for 7 months old, someone will take him for sure. Who would'nt, what sort of diet did you have him on
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: Ruth on March 22, 2013, 09:35:52 pm
Hi Danny

I paper train them - I found it works really well - I put them in my conservatory with a stairgate between them and the lounge, their bed is this end, their water bowl and toys and then newspaper by the back door on the tiled floor at the other end, they soon get the hang of it, Penny for example learnt the first few days to use the paper and to go when on walks, then I open the back door during the day and they can come and go as they please when I am home. They come in the lounge with me and the others in the evening (on lead) they can sit / play with me but I take them round the garden ever so often, then they are in the conservatory for the night- still have accidents for awhile during the night but it is usually on the paper.

Diet is always raw, tripe and chicken wings / thighs and lamb ribs. Sometimes sardines, lean mince, raw egg and tuna. My dogs have a more varied diet!

Rupert is looking fantastic considering the state he was in when we got him but now he needs his forever home to move on to the next stage. Hopefully we will get some decent applications that will be suitable for him.

dont think a girl getting killed last week will help to be honest, people are wary of rescues for bull breeds as the background is never certain.  I will take a rescue dog next time for sure

Danny....have you had Eme and Mocha both since pups.....together?
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: mocha on April 03, 2013, 08:58:27 am
yes, eme is 6 months older than mocha.  We got Eme first then mocha so had them since 2003.  Got them both about 8 weeks old, so we had eme first then mocha.  Never had any issues with eme adjusting to mocha.
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: Ruth on April 03, 2013, 09:31:56 am
But Rupert has been fully tested and being trained by J, we try them in all situations and J is experienced enough to assess a dog over a day let alone a few months  :(

It is sad - no disrespect to any breed but Bull terriers are a class and character of their own. Which is why we ask for specifically bull terrier experienced owners and not staffie, bull mastiff or crosses experience. Not because we think we are a cut above anyone but their traits are so very unique. Their stubborness often mistaken for stupidity, their bullie runs as being out of control, their trancing as being a sandwich short of a picnic, their 'talking' as growling, their desire for company, their wish to entertain, their mouthing....

Obviously we do get damaged bull terriers that are aggressive, mistrusting and sometimes just plain dangerous and we are not in the business of rehoming those to the public, yes you will get a chewer or a naughty one or high energy, basically a typical bull terrier but you will not get a dangerous one from us.
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: mocha on April 03, 2013, 09:55:43 am
What is that trancing about, mocha does that just standing with her head in a bush or something, i thought it was just her.   It is a bit odd, you have to admit, just standing there spaced out i want to know what she is thinking.

They are a marmite breed , Staffies and ebt are like chalk and cheese, they are at each end of the spectrum.  Fully understand why you would only want owners that have had ebts before.
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: Ruth on April 03, 2013, 10:29:13 am
Archie will do it in the fur trees when they touch his back, I had a bullie who used to trance under the Christmas tree and another who would go off into space with the table cloth touching his neck... My Lucy would very rarely do it. People refer to it as trancing or ghosting.

Do you know how many people say they would love an EBT and they are experienced because they have had staffies all their lives - that to me means they have no relevant experience as they haven't realised the differences - yes they will likely be lovely novice bull terrier owners but unlikely to be a good owner for a rescue EBT with all the potential  issues and baggage that come with them - occasionally we will get the 100% laid back bullie which is just perfect for a novice but they are few and far between. What works with staffies does not with EBTs.

EBTs for all their bullish appearance are sensitive souls and harsh treatment rarely works well, neither does long periods alone nor a weak owner.

Hey ho - back to Rupert and fingers crossed we have an experienced owner come forward for him that is prepared to travel to Worthing and get to know him.
Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: mocha on April 03, 2013, 01:15:11 pm
Must be nice once you find them a good home though, fingers crossed.

That's where we went wrong we sort of used the same methods for the ebt that worked for the staffy, over time we realized her sole aim is so much more about food.  Harsh treatment doesn't work, you have to adjust your lifestyle.

He was lovely with their dog but would not leave poor Storm alone he just wanted to play and play and play. He needs either another youngster who will match his energy levels or an older dog that is will put him in his place when they dont want to play any more.

He doesn't need to be an only as he is great with others but he could drive another dog to distraction if they aren't up for play ALL THE TIME. ??? ???

Introductions went really well - tired them out with a walk then had them off lead together in a secure yard and they wandered about without bothering each other.

Rupert's committed visitors are staying the night and walking them together in the morning and if all goes well will be taking this little boy home with a follow up check in 3 weeks. Looks like Roop may have his special home, a lovely bullie sister, fabulous new Mum & Dad and be on a beach in Torquay this time tomorrow ;) ;)

Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert
Post by: Ruth on November 18, 2013, 09:45:05 pm
Our lovely little Rupert is with Elaine still looking for his forever home with an experienced bullie person, he is a dream with other dogs when out and about and if you have very dog friendly dogs and introduce them properly and slowly he can live happily with them but they must be good natured as Rupert will play and play and tease them, he will back off when they tell him off however he will forget and try again 5 minutes later so they must be patient, even tempered and up for a game.

He must be fed separately however as he does have issues with food but we are working on that. He talkes a bit of time to build up trust so needs to be left to settle in his own time initially with an open crate where he can escape if he feels the need to. AFter he has settled and trusts you he is an affectionate and will be cracking dog to the right person.

He is doing really welll at Elaines coming on leaps and bounds but really needs a special home that will give him time to settle and see his real personality come out. It is a shame because most bullies are on their best behaviour at first but Rupert goes in and shows his worst for the first few weeks.

It is very difficult to find someone who will give him the chance he needs :-\ :-\

Title: Re: 7 month old male - partially deaf - Rupert

Rupert has been in two foster homes, one for 6 months and the other for 3 months, both said he was a challenge at first but was a great bullie boy after he settled in, both will vouch for his excellent behaviour with other dogs (both had 3 other dogs as well as Rupert) and his behaviour in the home and are happy to chat to any potential owners.

Unfortunately the first foster had to give him up as they had a prior obligation to take another dog in (not through us as they were only doing us a favour nursing rupert back to good health) and the second fosterer said he and his family would of kept him in a heartbeat as he was great with all their pack EXCEPT their rescue bullie girl who hated him on sight and Rupert wasn't keen on her either. He left there to go to his forever home which didn't work out as they did not have the patience to wait the month we said it would take to build up some trust before they would see the gorgeous boy he can be :(. In the meantime the second fosterer had taken in another bullie so had no room for Rupert, so the poor boy ended up at Elaines where we pay for his board.

He is on her Website and her facebook page and we both said that the next move must be to his hopefully forever home, he takes awhile to build up trust and each time he has been let down so now he trusts Elaine and her helpers so to move him to a foster home and then on again would be detrimental to his mental well being.

We need someone who will visit him at Elaines and get to know him and see how he can be before they take him home. There are not that many dedicated and committed people out there who are looking to rehome a bullie and certainly none have applied for Rupert through us or Elaine :( :( :( :(

It is heartbreaking, I dont even know why he has hung around so long, he is not a bad boy at all and if you see the photos earlier on in this thread he is great to walk with other dogs, he would probably be better with a non bull breed and funniliy enough he gets on better with male dogs than females, the rest is all about time and patience.

OK, well just for the favoured few on here, Rupert is in a home, he is being reasonably good but the lovely people who are thinking of adopting him are doing everything they were told to do and managing his potential bad behaviour.

They are fantastic and true rescuers who are prepared to give a challenging bullie a home and are really trying with Rupert, so far so good, his first week over :P :P :P

:) Two weeks!! Lets hope that he is starting to feel the love!!! :D Surely if his new family have 'survived' those two weeks that is a very hopeful sign!!!  :D If Roop is still there then they must be dedicated people to 'weather the storm'. BE GOOD! 8) Roop, you don't find many people like that!!  :-* ;)
