Good for you for taking Alfie to dog training - I took Billy, but he was so laid back - did what he needed to do and wanted to get it over with, when he was off the lead for the sit and stay command he always slowly walked over to the door and stayed there with his head up against it, he was a really good dog though and I could walk him off lead on the pavement, very calm and well behaved, he also smashed all the tasks and earnt a rosette!! He worked his way up pretty quickly to agility - which we never bothered with as let's face it - Bully's are not the most agile of breeds. Also took Violet to dog training classes - completely different experience, she spent her whole time barking throughout the hour lesson and was aggressive to any dog that came near her.  She managed to complete all her goals but we weren't invited back for the next course!! Can't think why not?  :-\ :-\ :-* :-*

I kind of think that they can tell us how it's been for them and what they've been through - Violet is similar to Alfie - in that she has always been happy to sleep on the sofa away from us at nightime - I think that she had always been away from her previous owners at bed time - but when it's the weekend or if we are having a lay in between 8.30am - 9.00am (you can set your watch by her timing) she will start doing that high pitched anxious bark that they do and head butt the bed room door - we then let her in and she settles on the bed. She has some weird ways... We've had to get used to them! Also, when I first got her and walked her and didn't let her off the lead - she used to look at me as if I was stupid and she always lunged on her lead when people were playing with their dogs with tennis balls - I thought this was aggression, but when I started letting her off the lead - she ran off to play ball with two staffies, and then I realised that she was a dog that had probably had ball runs - so we started this and never looked back - she loves it!! Also, when we used to pat her she would look all anxious - hard to describe this but her ears would lower and she just looked worried - so I think she was smacked a lot.  She is now ok with a 'good girl pat' (has to be said in a stupid high pitched voice when you do it).  I think we learn a lot from our welfare dogs over time.. And that's how we earn their trust.. Bless you for taking Alfie on  :-* and let me know if and how you can get him to settle when he goes visiting - we've given up on it now - but Violet has to come camping every now and then whether she likes it or not, even though she spoils it for the rest of us!!  Have to say she now settles very well when she's at Center Parcs the bloody diva that she is!!!  :) :)
